Josef Schott (1915-2009) was a Czech-Swedish glass artist, born in Czechoslovakia. He studied art in Salzburg and Berlin and moved to Sweden after World War II. In Sweden he worked for the glassworks Smålandshyttan, where he became known for his innovative designs.
Schott's work for Smålandshyttan also included vases using a 'sommerso' technique, where coloured glass is encased in clear glass. An example of this is a heavy, cast vase from the 1960s, with smoky pink glass encased in clear glass. This vase is marked 'Schott' as part of the pattern on one of the short sides.
Original pieces by Josef Schott for Smålandshyttan are often signed with his name and sometimes provided with a label. These works are sought after by collectors of Scandinavian glassware because of their unique designs and craftsmanship.
