The vase with model number B894 is a design by the Swedish designer Gunnar Nylund for the Strömbergshyttan glassworks, introduced in the late 1950s. This model is a variation on his earlier design, model B679 from 1955-1956, with thicker walls and a heavier base.
The vase is made using the 'Sommerso' technique, where a coloured glass layer is enclosed by a clear crystal outer layer. The design is characterised by a simple, organic shape and subtle grey tones that transition into clear glass.
Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) is best known as a ceramic designer for Rörstrand, but between 1953 and 1956 he also designed glass objects for Strömbergshyttan. His works from this period are characterised by handmade, organic forms with a modern look.
Original copies of the B894 vase are often signed on the underside with 'Strömbergshyttan B894'. The vase is a sought-after collector's item among lovers of mid-century modern design and Scandinavian glassware.
When considering purchasing such a vase, it is important to check the condition for any damage, such as chips or scratches, as these can affect the value and aesthetics. Original examples in good condition will generally retain their value and are a valuable addition to any design collection.
